What are alternative ways of Open Access publishing?
The University Library has made agreements with several publishers in order to render publication processes more efficient and to reduce publication costs for university members. Below, you can find current DEAL agreements as well as a list of publishers the University Library has agreements with.
What kind of financial support is offered?
Discounts for publication fees/APC when publishing articles, including several publishing houses

- Article is approved and published
- Discounted invoice is sent to the University Library
- Payment of the remaining amount (recommendation by the University Library):

Invoices are sent directly to the University Library. For articles that are to be covered by authors from other institutions, correct classification must be ensured and the University Library must be informed in a timely manner. Should you wish to make use of financial support from the Publication Fund, please fill out the corresponding request form Please make sure to thoroughly check the funding criteria to ensure a successful application. If the application is not approved, you will receive an invoice from the respective Dean's Office for the publication fees.
DEAL Agreements
Nature and Nature-branded
The University of Potsdam is participating in a transformative agreement for Nature and Nature-branded journals. The Nature Publish and Read Framework Agreement including a journal list is publicly available (https://doi.org/10.17617/2.3263806). Since July 2021, it enables authors affiliated with the University of Potsdam to publish their research articles accepted for publication in Nature and Nature-branded research journals immediately Open Access at no cost to them. This does not apply to gold open access journals such as Nature Communications (see also the DEAL agreement with Springer Nature). The University of Potsdam also has read access to the complete Nature portfolio, including Nature Review titles and all forthcoming Nature-branded journals.
Contract period: 4 years (2021-2024)
Springer Nature
Since April 2020, the University of Potsdam has a DEAL contract with Springer Nature. This agreement provides permanent access to the current volumes of the contract period of all approximately 1,900 journals (including Springer Medical, Palgrave, Adis and Macmillan Academic) retroactively back to the year of publication 1997.
Since 1 January 2020, all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish open access in Springer Nature subscription-only (hybrid) journals. The reference date is the time of online publication of the respective article. The corresponding publication costs are included in the total fees to be paid to the publisher by the University Library. When submitting your articles, please make sure that you enter the correct affiliation. If this is not indicated correctly, there may be administrative delays in the attribution of the work to the University of Potsdam.
From 1 August 2020 on, corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions may publish in Springer Nature's roughly 600 open access journals (including Scientific Reports and Nature Communications). The resulting publication costs will be invoiced directly to the University of Potsdam.
If funding through the Publication Fund is possible, we ask for applicationimmediately after the submitted manuscript has been accepted. Any costs exceeding the partial funding will be invoiced to the authors via the University Library.
Current list of Springer Nature journals that are part of the contract
Wiley
Since April 2019, the University of Potsdam has been participating in the DEAL contract with Wiley. This makes it possible to access roughly 1,700 journals retroactively up to the publication year 1997.
Since 22 January 2019, all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish in Wiley's gold open access journals at a 20 % discount within the framework of the agreement. The publication costs will be invoiced directly to the University of Potsdam. If funding through the Publication Fund is possible, we ask for an application immediately after the manuscript has been accepted.
From 1 July 2019 on, all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish open access in subscription-only (hybrid) Wiley journals. The corresponding publication costs are included in the total fees to be paid to the publisher by the University Library. Thus, there are no additional costs for you. An exception may be publications with the American Geophysical Union (AGU), for which additional excess page feesmay be charged.
When submitting your articles, please make sure to enter the correct affiliation. In case of doubt, the attribution to the University of Potsdam will be verified by the University Library as part of the publication workflow.
Publishing Agreements
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
As part of a consortial agreement with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) from 2018, a 15 % discount on article processing charges for articles in the journal Science Advances is granted. The discount is granted to all members of the University of Potsdam who have the status of a corresponding author. Please also take note of the leaflet AAAS/Science Advances APC Author Workflow.

Association for Computing (ACM)
Since September 2020, the University of Potsdam has had a transformative agreement with ACM. This provides access to the entire portfolio of the ACM Digital Library
All corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish open access within the framework of the contract. The corresponding publication costs are included in the total fees to be paid by the University Library to the publisher.
When submitting your articles, please make sure that you enter the correct affiliation and ideally use your university e-mail address. In case of doubt, the attribution to the University of Potsdam will be verified by the University Library as part of the publishing workflow.
Contract period: 3 1/2 years (2020-2023)
Astronomy & Astrophysics (EDP Sciences)
Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) is published under Subscribe-to-Open (S2O). In 2022, with the support of A&A subscribers, articles accepted from 4 April on will be published open access under a CC-BY 4.0 license. The University of Potsdam is a current subscriber of A&A.
As a corresponding author affiliated with the University of Potsdam (or any other German academic institution), you can publish in A&A at a 20 % discounted APC price.
BioMed Central (BMC) - terminated
Potsdam University Library has had a so-called prepaid membership with BioMed Central (BMC) since 2003. Since July 2020, BMC is part of the DEAL agreement with Springer Nature.
Cambridge University Press (CUP)
With a Publish&Read model on current journals, Potsdam University Library participates in the alliance license with Cambridge University Press (CUP). This is a multidisciplinary journal package that includes 404 titles in the total portfolio, of which 44 journals are published in gold open access and more than 330 journals that offer a hybrid publishing option.
All corresponding authors of the University of Potsdam are entitled to publish in the CUP journals with publication option in open access without any restrictions. There are no additional costs for authors. The publisher only charges for color illustrations if these are requested by the author for the print version. No page charges are levied for open access publications. In addition to Research Articles, Review Articles and Rapid Communications, Brief Reports as well as Case Reports are also considered as article types. Articles are made open access immediately upon publication under a CC-BY license, unless the author prefers a different license.
CUP intends to transform a substantial part of its subscription journals to gold open access by 2025.

COGITATIO
Since October 2018, the Potsdam University Library has had a publishing agreement with COGITATIO. To streamline processes, invoices for open access publications with COGITATIO are submitted to the University Library. These rules apply to corresponding authors who are members of the University of Potsdam. An APC discount of 20 % is granted; a reimbursement of the costs can be applied for via the publication fund of the University of Potsdam.
Company of Biologists
The University of Potsdam is participating in a read and publish licence agreement with the Company of Biologists. That enables corresponding authors of the University of Potsdam to publish research articles immediately, uncapped and APC-free in open access and under CC BY 4.0 licence. There is the possibility to choose between hybrid subscription journals (Development; Journal of Cell Science; Journal of Experimental Biology) or gold open access journals (Disease Models & Mechanisms; Biology Open).

Copernicus
Since 2015, the Potsdam University Library has had a publishing agreement with Copernicus. When submitting their articles, authors have the option to select “University of Potsdam” and thus enable central invoicing.
De Gruyter
The University of Potsdam is participating in an open access transformation contract for the overall portfolio "HSS" (Humanities and Social Sciences) at De Gruyter. The portfolio is divided into convolut A and convolut B. In the journals of convolut A, authors of the University of Potsdam can publish open access articles free of charge as corresponding authors, whereas in the journals of convolut B they cannot. There is complete read access for both bundles.
The assignment of the authorized publications as well as the identification and information of the authorized authors is carried out by the publisher. The publications covered by the "Read & Publish" agreement will be released in a timely manner.
Additionally, authors of the University of Potsdam receive a 20 % discount on the list prices of APCs for publication in De Gruyter's gold open access journals.

List of journals from convolut A
Frontiers
Potsdam University Library has had a so-called prepaid membership with Frontiers since 2016. This makes it possible to publish open access in Frontiers journals at reduced rates (5 % discount).
Hogrefe
The University of Potsdam is participating in an open access transformation framework agreement for PsyJOURNALS. Members of the University of Potsdam can publish open access in subscription-based journals free of charge. The publisher grants a discount of 25 % of the list price on article processing charges of gold open access journals. As usual, authors submit their manuscript directly to the journal as corresponding author or submitting author. Institute of Physics (IOP)
The Institutional Research License (Read and Publish) allows authors of the University of Potsdam to publish free of charge, without embargo period and under CC BY 4.0 license in 53 hybrid journals and 21 gold open access journals of IOP. As a corresponding author or submitting author you may submit your article directly to the journal as usual. The assignment is made via your University of Potsdam email address.

Lyell Collection / Geological Society of London
The University of Potsdam participates in the "Read & Publish" agreement for the Geological Society's Lyell Collectionwhich includes reading access to 14 journals and books, including all current and archived journals, as well as major book series and historical collections. The agreement also includes unlimited open access publications of all article types in 6 hybrid journals and 3 hybrid book series.
Open access publishing is unlimited for corresponding authors of the University of Potsdam and applies to all article types under CC-BY license terms. Corresponding authors should identify themselves with their University of Potsdam email address and ensure that their author profile in the editorial manager reflects their institutional credentials in order to be identified as eligible for open access publication.

Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI)
The University Library has signed an institutional membership agreement with the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). Corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam can save 10 % of the publication costs.
Public Library of Science (PLoS)
Since 2015, the Potsdam University Library has had a publishing agreement with PLoS. To streamline processes, invoices for open access publications in PLoS go to the University Library. These rules apply to corresponding authors who are members of the University of Potsdam.
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
Corresponding authors receive a 15% discount on article processing charges for open access publishing in hybrid journals of RSC. For publishing in the publisher's gold open access journals, there are fees for two of them: RSC Advances (APC 850 GBP) and Nanoscale Advances (APC 1,600 GBP). For all other journals, the APC is waived for the authors.
Taylor & Francis
The University of Potsdam is participating in an open access iniative with Taylor & Francis (T&F) that includes discounted APCs and is valid for all T&F's hybrid (subscription based) journals. Authors from the University of Potsdam receive an allowance entitling them to 75 % discount on hybrid open access APCs.
Submissions of open access articles need to mention the University of Potsdam as the author's affiliation.
Submit your article directly to the journal as usual. In the submission process, you will already be informed by the publisher about the possibility of an open access publication. The University Library will receive a notification from T&F concerning your submission and will contact you to clarify whether you would like to use the Open Access option. Once the University Library has received your confirmation, a hybrid publication of your article will be set up with T&F.
