The University of Potsdam aims at increasing the awareness of its scholars' and researchers' strong research performance. Above all, publications of the latter are frequently high in demand and are evaluated by cooperation partners and funding bodies, but also within the context of international rankings. Publications in renowned journals and serials lead to a higher awareness of both the researchers involved as well as the University of Potsdam and Potsdam as a research location.
There are two crucial factors that help to gain a higher awareness: First, upon its release, each publication has to be assigned correctly to both the author and the university involved. Second, all publications assigned to each single author and to the university have to be put together entirely.
In order to present both the research strength of the University of Potsdam and the research results themselves comprehensively and correctly, all authors are required to use the following guidelines for indicating institutional affiliation and authorship. In particular, these guidelines can be sent to cooperation partners with whom joint publications are submitted.
Name of the University
The name of the university must be indicated as follows:
Universität Potsdam (German)
University of Potsdam (English)
Indication of further affiliations
In addition to the name of the university, you should also indicate further institutional affiliations (faculty, subject area, department, institute etc.) to ensure a precise and clear assignment of your publication.
When indicating your affiliation, put the name of your general affiliation first, followed by the more specific institutional affiliation (i.e. university and institute):
Universität Potsdam, Institut für Physik und Astronomie,
Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 24-25, 14476 Potsdam, Deutschland
Universität Potsdam, Digital Engineering Fakultät
Prof.-Dr.-Helmert-Str. 2-3, 14482 Potsdam, Deutschland
University of Potsdam, Institute of Physics and Astronomy,
Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 24-25, 14476 Potsdam, Germany
University of Potsdam, Digital Engineering Faculty,
Prof.-Dr.-Helmert-Str. 2-3, 14482 Potsdam, Germany
In case the input form has a character limit, you should use standardized abbreviations to indicate your affiliation. The university's name should be abbreviated as Univ Potsdam in both English and German. Abbreviations of further institutional affiliations should be applied in accordance with the corresponding institute's standards.
Univ Potsdam, Inst Phys & Astron, 14476 Potsdam, Germany
Multiple institutional affiliations/joint professorships
In order to indicate several institutional affiliations, in particular in the case of joint appointments, the University of Potsdam must be indicated in the appropriate place:
Examples (joint professorships):
Your Name 1, 2
1 German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam Rehbrücke, Department of Molecular Toxicology, Arthur-Scheunert-Allee 114-116, 14558 Nuthetal, Germany
2 University of Potsdam, Institute of Nutritional Science, Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, Arthur-Scheunert-Allee 114-116, 14558 Nuthetal, Germany
1 Hasso Plattner Insitute for Digital Engineering gGmbH, Prof.-Dr.-Helmert-Str. 2-3, 14482 Potsdam, Germany
2 University of Potsdam, Digital Engineering Faculty, Prof.-Dr.-Helmert-Str. 2-3, 14482 Potsdam, Germany
Unique author names
The University of Potsdam recommends a standardized use of your name in academic publications. This applies above all to names with prefixes, conjunctions, multiple first names, or double names.
The allocation of unique identifiers for authors is becoming more and more important. Therefore, we strongly recommend using an Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID). Setting up this ID is free of charge and only takes a couple of minutes. The decision of setting up an ID in multiple systems should be taken in accordance with your institute's guidelines.
The University Library is happy to provide further information and assistance on the topics of affiliation and author identifiers. For further information, please contact the head of media processing, Linda Thomas.
